Environment Project: Conservation efforts with Mauritius Wildlife Foundation Background: Cim Finance reaffirms its commitment to environmental preservation by supporting the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF), the largest NGO in Mauritius dedicated to conserving and restoring the nation’s endangered plant and animal species. MWF plays a critical role in saving native species through the restoration of entire ecosystems. Our response: Cim Finance contributed to the MWF’s conservation projects, engaging staff in meaningful activities. These included participating in the lifting and weighing of tortoises on Île Aux Aigrettes and cleaning activities in Mondrain and Île de la Passe. 42 Lives impacted Employees participated, deepening their awareness and engagement Project: Preserving national heritage at Western Cemetery, Port Louis Background: The Western Cemetery, established in 1771, is the oldest functioning cemetery in Mauritius and home to 25 declared national monuments – making it the site with the highest concentration of national heritage in the country. Sauvegarde du Cimetière de l’Ouest Ltée (SCO), a nonprofit established in 2018, works to preserve the historic environment of this heritage site. The cemetery is an invaluable part of the nation’s patrimony, but it faces challenges related to vegetation management, security, and infrastructure upkeep. Our response: Cim Finance supported SCO’s initiative by funding three key aspects of the project: routine vegetation control, planting and nourishment of new vegetation, and landscaping of pathways within the cemetery. Lives impacted The Mauritian population at large, through a more welcoming environment and the preservation of a site with deep historical and cultural value for future generations to cherish Project: Rehabilitation of SSR Botanical Garden, Pamplemousses Background: The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) Botanical Garden, established in 1729, is the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere and a globally recognised botanical landmark. Home to 823 plant species, it attracts 300,000 annual visitors, 275,000 of whom are international. However, due to years of decline, this national treasure requires rehabilitation to preserve its heritage and modernise its infrastructure. Strategic goals have been outlined to manage the garden scientifically, infrastructurally, and culturally, ensuring its conservation and public appeal. Our response: Cim Finance supported this ambitious project by sponsoring key infrastructural works and restoration efforts. This included repairing key infrastructure such as benches, bridges, and canals, rejuvenating the shade house for plant exchange, and revitalising the historic Pont des Soupirs. Landscaping efforts focused on pruning, removing dead trees, and introducing new decorative species, ensuring the garden’s continued role as a vibrant space for conservation, education, and cultural enrichment. Additionally, the historic Château de Mon Plaisir was transformed into an exhibition space, celebrating the garden’s botanical history while enriching its cultural and educational value. Lives impacted Visitors, scientists, and conservationists from around the globe will benefit from an enriched experience, while Mauritians can take pride in the preservation of this heritage site for generations to come.
